Work in progress (public display of art-making process)Sapporo x Munich Sister City Artist in Residence Exchange Programme: “Art Material Recycling Center Shukatsu”

The Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio is the official artist-in-residence (AIR) base of the City of Sapporo, equipped with an environment where artists and researchers in culture and art from Japan and abroad stay and work.

This winter, we invited “treibgut,” an art collective in Munich, Sapporo’s sister city, to Sapporo to conduct a pioneering circulation project in which used materials are collected from cultural facilities, processed, and offered to local cultural professionals at a low cost. The project will also launch an experimental art project to turn the studio into a “recycling center” by researching the local area with Sapporo-based artist Miyuki Oka.
Against the backdrop of issues such as the declining birthrate, aging population, depletion of resources, and global warming, we will explore sustainable circulation of art resources unique to Sapporo, calling for the participation of art and cultural facilities and organizations in the city as well as citizens.
